Life of the Samurai - Prologue

Over the following weeks I will use these posts to track the progress of Life of the Samurai, a project which began out of personal pleasure and for my own development.

Life of the Samurai is a game strongly inspired by Sword of the Samurai, a little known gem from 1989 which puts you in the role of a Samurai advancing for the supreme military power in Japan's Edo Period: The Shogunate. Sword of the Samurai was a simple game, in that its single parts were short and sweet - a duel between two samurai, a battle between small units, a rogue-like top-down fight against multiple enemies, and the meta-game. However, when put together, the game was more than the sum of its parts - it pulled the player into a long and difficult journey that was as fun as it was rewarding.

All this made Sword of the Samurai, despite its wide spread lack of popularity, become one of my favourite games of all times. Stalking forums and chat boards over the years, I hoped to see a sequel or a remake, one that would offer the same journey, but beyond the limits of the 80's hardware. A sequel with better duels, battles, and graphics. As the years passed and nothing came out of the waiting, I finally decided this was unlikely to happen anytime soon, so I went ahead and took matters into my own hands. This, too, proved to be a difficult, but fun and rewarding journey.
